a bit of a disagreement

When I disagree with someone or an idea, I always like to understand the why behind the other person’s belief.  I figure they must have some reason that works for them even if I cannot agree with it.  It’s part of my whole compassion thing- trying to understand someone else’s point of view.

I’m pretty stuck here on this disagreement.

I have yet to find one reason behind why Sarah Palin believes it is an excellent idea to kill wolves and their pups.  If she’s going to administer numerous deadly assaults on packs of wolves, I want to know why.  I already know I’ll disagree with her logic, but I just want to hear the logic itself.  I want to know why anyone thinks it is acceptable to kill a pack’s parents, leave orphans, and then decide that they might as well kill all the pups execution style.  True story.  Really happens.  I actually threw up in my mouth when I read the ‘executioner’s confession.  I want to know why she felt that was a necessary action.

I am searching for one reason, one way for me to comprehend how this practice continues to this day.  It seems to me such a blatant disregard for life- no one eats these animals, no one needs their pelts, they aren’t being used for a thing but bragging rights.  And really- how cool are you if you kill a defenseless baby wolf?  Why is a beautiful creature being systematically and brutally pushed off this planet?  I need to know her why- it makes me so sick.

STH71639Obviously, not a wolf.  Genetically, however, a wolf’s descendant.

Really?  Gas pups to death?  How scary to imagine the lack of heart and soul that kind of a killer must have.

details

“slow down, you move too fast.”

I realized this morning how many details are lost when we move too fast throughout the day to ‘get things done.’

STH71619That’s pretty and all, but what about when you stop to look at the details…

STH71623and more color…STH71624

When we pause long enough to appreciate each detail offered to us, we find:

“Let the morning time drop all it’s petals on me…Life I love you, All is Groovy…”

Ugh.

Dear Jerks Who Trashed the Beach Last Night,

My intention this cool Sunday morning was to walk my dogs to the beach and play freely in that magical time between night’s quiet and day’s activity.  There really is nothing like early morning at the beach…herons, eagles, sea lions…

I’d like to thank you for smashing your glass bottles all over the place.  I really appreciate it.  We got to quickly scamper around trash piles, hoping to keep our feet from getting cut on glass.  Thanks for the relaxing morning walk.

When you live in a place of exquisite natural beauty how do you decide your best option for empty beer bottle disposal is to smash them?  You have now endangered numerous animals and increased pollution in the ocean.  Not to mention, there are teams of men working to clean up your crap at 6 in the morning.  Really?  Is it really someone else’s job to clean up your mess?

One man I ran into down there sighed, “We used to drink down here, sure, but we packed everything out.”

A kind soul working to clean the area told me, “It’s like this every weekend.  It gets worse every year.”  And then with sadness, “I just don’t understand it.”

Because of your need to prove you were the craziest last night, your beer bottle smashing has contributed to the desecration of my beautiful natural world.  I’ll be sure to have my grandchildren thank you for your mindlessness.

an update

Time for an update from us puppies over here in Seattle.  Today we went to Mommy’s school and helped her sort books.  We ran around a lot and barked at inanimate objects and forced her to work extra quickly.  That was good because we didn’t really want to be there.  It is not as much fun as being at the ocean or in the woods.  We are very smart to do things that get us in trouble and away from places we don’t like much.

Then we got new new toys because we chew our toys a lot and we don’t have many indestructible things, and that is what Mommy said we needed.  So we went to the pet store and what we wanted was this big bone with yummy meat still on it, but we couldn’t pull it out of the basket because it was bigger than our heads, and Mommy said No Puppies, you really dont need that.

So we didn’t get the big bone, but I think we should get it one day.  We are trying so hard to be on our best behavior.

We did get two new balls.  They have stretchy holes in them and one is big and one is not as big.  Let us show you some pictures of us with the balls.

STH71607That’s us, playing tug.  We love tug.

STH71610We were sharing here.  If we share for a long time, we get a good treat, like chicken or cheese.  We are trying to share here.

STH71613Sometimes it is hard to choose which ball to play with.  Even though there is one available, the best toy is really the one that she has.

In other news, we got to dig in the garden the other night, finally.  We always hear Get out of the garden dogs, Out puppies, Out!  But we got to go in it, because we made a salad with fresh lettuce from the garden.  We didn’t care much for the lettuce part, but the cheese on top was divine.  Really, is there anything better than a good chevre?

STH71606You can’t see the cheese here because it was on the side.  It was the last thing to be dribbled on top and that is why we sit underneath the countertop, waiting for the little dribbles to drop under our waiting snouts.  Then we gobble them up right away.

That is all we have to say right now.  We need to go on patrol.  Nightfall is coming, and the neighborhood cats, squirrels, birds, and other canines have started to infiltrate our territory.  Time to tell them who’s boss.  We hope you all are well.  You are welcome to visit us at anytime.  We are very fond of two legged peoples.

Love and Kisses,

Jersey and Bailey

show me a day when the world wasn’t new

I saw that quote in a bathroom stall yesterday, and laughed, thinking of the weekend I had just spent with my almost 20 month old niece.  Each morning we surveyed the backyard for animals, talked about what we saw, and she requested those that we didn’t.  I think I severely disappointed her yesterday when I was unable to produce not one lion, bear, monkey, elephant, or snake.  All I could find were the dogs and birds.  Oh well.  She did, however, tell me that my pup’s tail looked like a snake and laugh at her own joke.  (All with animals sounds, gestures, and signs- she communicates remarkably well- language development is SO FASCINATING!  but that’s a topic for another day…)

This morning I took the pups on a very windy walk.  Risky business.  Wind forces leaves and petals to fall off the foliage and fly around, which causes young four legged creatures to launch sporadically in attempts to catch them.  For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, the reaction here being the position of my rotator cuffs becoming compromised at alarming speeds.

One might think after the 93rd free flying leaf blew by the game would become old news.  Turns out it doesn’t.  The same thing again and again, but never perceived as the ’same thing’ by Jersey and Bailey.

At one point the idea went through my mind that if they were such intelligent animals how could they chase leaves on repeat?  I quickly resolved that with the realization that very act is part of their inherent brilliance.

“Never Give Up”

This piece was written by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama…and I like it.

NEVER GIVE UP

no matter what is going on

Never give up

Develop the heart

Too much energy in your country

is spent developing the mind

instead of the heart

Develop the heart

Be compassionate

Not just to your friends

but to everyone

Be compassionate

Work for peace

in your heart and in the world

Work for peace

and I say again

Never give up

No matter what is happening

No matter what is going on around you

Never give up
